How High Tech Is Making Motorcycles Safer

|

Motorcycle manufacturers are always seeking ways to make their bikes faster, sturdier, more fuel-efficient and—most importantly—safer. Utilizing the latest in motorcycle technology, recent offerings from the top names in the business are helping riders enjoy themselves with less risk. The following are just some of the high-tech advances motorcyclists are, or soon will, benefit from.

Display screens. Integrated motorcycle screens are easier to read than ever. They provide riders with a steady stream of information about everything from tire pressure to electronic suspension status. Beyond your bike’s performance, they can provide reports on traffic and weather conditions, road closures, and other alerts.

Cameras and radar. Manufacturers are incorporating cameras and radar units to provide the riders with 360-degree views of their environment. These virtually eliminate blind spots and help riders spot vehicles, animals, and other sudden incursions even while traveling through intersections, up and down steep hills, and around sharp bends.

Artificial intelligence. These advanced systems provide real-time hazard alerts to riders via display integration. They are capable of analyzing and reporting risks like a fast-approaching car, changing traffic controls, and lane “creep.” They can also learn from the rider’s habits and improve alerts accordingly.

Switchable ABS and traction controls. The ability to switch anti-lock braking on and off provides riders with greater control. More motorcycles are offering this option; some allow the rider to switch only the rear or the front ABS, while others allow for both. Improvements in torque enables bikers to reach higher speeds quickly regardless of weight and to maintain consistent speed without losing power. Meanwhile, improved traction controls help riders maintain control and reduce the risk of skidding out. More advanced options automatically reduce speed and/or power safely when challenging conditions are detected.

Airbags. While these have been available from some motorcycle manufacturers for years, various studies have yielded safer, more effective versions. Improvements include ways to better tether airbags to motorcycle frames for more secure support should they deploy, censors to keep the bag from inflating with too much force, and adjustments to the shape of the airbag for broader protection of the rider.

Cornering/Adaptive Cruise Control Management. Integrated sensors adjust speed and apply brakes as needed automatically to allow riders to take even the sharpest turns with less risk of losing control. Meanwhile, impressive advances in cruise control enable bikes to automatically adjust throttle response, brake, and otherwise respond instantly to vehicles ahead of the rider stopping suddenly or veering into their lane.
