What Are the Treatment Options for Spinal Cord Injuries?

|

Motorcycle accidents can result in severe injuries, including injuries to the spinal cord or SCIs. Spinal cord injuries can affect sensory function and movement. Neck pain and weakness can be two signs of such injuries.

According to Mayo Clinic, x-rays, CT scans and MRIs can helpĀ diagnose a spinal cord injury. If you suffered an SCI, what are the possible treatment options?

Early treatment options

Once the spinal cord suffers damage, the doctors cannot reverse the damage. Treatment often begins at the accident site. Paramedics attempt to immobilize the spine with a neck collar and a carrying board. Once in the emergency room, physicians have to focus on shock prevention and complication avoidance. They may also need to maintain your breathing for you.

To treat a spinal cord injury, there are medications, surgeries and immobilization. Surgical procedures can remove bone fragments, objects and fractured vertebrae. Surgery can also stabilize the spine.

Later treatment options

Once stabilized, doctors focus on preventing secondary issues. These issues include:

  • Pressure ulcers
  • Respiratory infections
  • Blood clots
  • Bowel problems

In your early stages of recovery, you may have a rehabilitation team. Rehabilitation emphasizes developing fine motor skills, strengthening muscle function and learning to perform everyday tasks. The physicians teach about the effects of your spinal cord injury and also help advise you on how to rebuild your life and to regain your independence as much as possible.

You may need certain medications to control muscle spasticity, pain and other functions. Likewise, you may learn to use modern wheelchairs, electronic aids and other devices to increase your quality of life.
